SUSD Parents Graduate from Parent Training and Leadership Academy!

More than 20 parents graduated from the newest Parent Academy on April 11, this time at Hazelton Elementary School! Parents participated in the intensive parent education class to better help their children succeed in school. Congratulations to our Hazelton, McKinley, Pittman and San Joaquin Parents and thank you for participating in this valuable program!

More PLUS School Training for Student Leaders

Congratulations to the PLUS student teams out of SUSD schools who met Saturday at Taggart Gym for another great round of leadership training by national expert John Vanderburgh. More than 300 students participated in exercises aimed at helping them help their fellow students and provide leadership at their schools. Among the issues the student leaders addressed: bullying, suicide, drug use, gang prevention and overall engagement in class and at school.

Superintendent Steven Lowder began SUSD’s PLUS program a year ago at the high schools. Starting this spring students from the elementary schools began training and by next year, PLUS leadership should be nearly universal, a first for a district SUSD’s size. Mr. Vanderburgh praised the stunning success of the program at Edison, Chavez, Stagg and Franklin high schools and said he expects inclusion of the smaller high schools and the elementary schools will make SUSD a standout in the national program.

The PLUS leadership teams take on difficult school wide issues, such as cyber bullying, find solutions and get administration support for direct actions. “It has been so great,” said a Chavez senior member of the team. “We are making a difference at our schools. We are addressing things we want changed ourselves and not leaving it to the principal and the staff. It is meaningful.”

Rotary Read-In Event

Thank you to all of the hundreds of volunteers and the Rotary Read-In directors who staged the biggest reading event yet this week. We had community members in just about every Pre-K through 3rd grade class in Stockton Unified School district and the students loved every minute of it. We know your time is important and we appreciate your spending some of it with us. Our students are our single most important asset and we appreciate all your support to help them succeed. Thank also for the generous gifts of beautiful children's books for our libraries and classrooms. As our district embarks on the new Common Core Standards, where reading and writing will be so important, the annual Rotary Read-In is more important than ever!!
This is a year-long planning effort by the Stockton Rotary organizations and this year’s event went off beautifully as a result of their good work. Again, our great thanks for this very valuable event!

Congratulations SECA on Your Successful Mock Trial Showing!
