Governor Brown, Superintendent Torlakson
Visit Van Buren Elementary School

Governor Jerry Brown and State Super-intendent Tom Torlakson visited Van Buren Elementary School on Thursday, April 14, 2011 to conduct a Town Hall Meeting concerning the funding crisis in K-12 education.  Along with Deputy Finance Director Todd Jerue, the pair fielded questions from an audience that included superintendents from every district in San Joaquin County, SUSD Board Members, other area politicians including Mayor Ann Johnston, key members of the local business community, union leaders, teachers from several county school districts, and students from Van Buren School.  Though the topic was a somber one, the meeting went smoothly, and SUSD was complimented by the governor’s advance team for its attention to detail and its readiness for contingencies.
Stockton Unified School District staff was contacted by Superintendent Torlakson’s advance secretary late in the afternoon on April 12 and immediately began preparing for the visit.  Van Buren was identified as the host for the event by midday Wednesday, April 13.
Special thanks to all of the staff who participated to make this event a success!

SUSD Visual and Performing Arts Showcase
March 29, 2011
The Stockton Unified School District Visual and Performing Arts Annual Showcase held on March 29th, 2011 at the Stockton Arena was a tremendous success with audience attendance exceeding 3,000 parents, family members, friends and district staff.
This celebration of our district’s Visual and Performing Arts program consisted of art work from 32 schools, dancers from six schools and student musicians from 46 schools. Each of the 800 student artists and 1,500 student musicians were presented medals for their accomplishments.
Featured in the concert was our Award winning Franklin Drumline, the Chavez Mariachi Band and Showchoir. Also performing were the combined elementary schools’ intermediate, advanced concert bands, orchestras, VAPA dancers and choirs. The combined high schools’ band, orchestra, choir and dancers performed selections from the Classics, Broadway, the Beatles and Stevie Wonder Hits.
The finale, America the Beautiful was beautifully performed by the combined ensembles with audience participation.
We appreciate the support of the SUSD Administration, staff , parents and the community..
