Stockton
Ports
Mural News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. -The Stockton
Ports, 11-time champions of the
California League, are excited to
announce that Stockton's Elmwood
Elementary School's 5th, 7th & 8th
grade classes won the Ports "Casey
at the Bat" art contest, and that
their original design will be
showcased all year long at Banner
Island Ballpark.
The Ports are proud to pay tribute
to the legend and legacy of the
"Casey at the Bat" poem by Ernest
Lawrence Thayer by showcasing
artwork that highlights the team's
connection to the famous poem.
According to baseball tradition,
Thayer's classic poem was inspired
by the 1888 Stockton team that
played along the Delta Channel, as
the waterfront area was called "Mudville"
at that time.
The winning students will sign their
display in a pre-game ceremony on
Saturday, April 17. The artwork will
be displayed year-round exclusively
by the Season Ticket Holder gate at
Banner Island Ballpark.
All of the other artwork submitted
will also be showcased during the
2010 season at Banner Island
Ballpark in various places. The
Ports were thrilled with the
response and appreciate all of the
creativity, effort and time that
went into all of the submissions in
the art contest. The Ports are proud
to also showcase the artwork of all
students at their ballpark.

ARTS INFUSION PERFORMANCE
Ms.
Hilary Andaya’s 2nd/3rd
combination class presented a
performance at our Citizen of the
Month assembly and it was amazing!
Ms. Andaya told the audience that
her students were enjoying the
series of books by Laura Numeroff:
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You
Give a Moose a Muffin,
etc, so she decided to use that
style of writing to illustrate the
concept of “sequencing.” In other
words, one thing must lead to the
next event and so on.
So after her students understood the
concept of sequencing they
collectively wrote a story,
“The First Thanksgiving”,
using the same tone and verbiage as
the Numeroff books. They then
auditioned for roles in the story,
practiced performing their story and
performed it for other Elmwood
students.
Great Job Ms. Andaya’s Class!!!!
