Elmwood
School recently unveiled a large
mural in our cafeteria
recognizing students who did
well on the 2010 STAR Test in

stars are made with the names of
those students who were
Proficient/Advanced in last
year’s STAR Test. We have over
200 student names on this
beautiful mural. We would like
to thank Mrs. Quezada for her
great work! Also, several

PARENT WORKSHOP
"Helping your Child with the
Arts" |
|
Ms. Celisse Johnson, our
Dance/Movement Teacher presented
an outstanding workshop for
Elmwood Parents. The objective
of presentation was to give
parents a few tools to assist
their children with their
English Language Arts
curriculum. The focus was on the
primary grades but the
techniques could be implemented
at any grade level. The
presentation began with the
parents learning the phonetic
sounds of five letters; A, M, P,
S, and T and the corresponding
action for each one. Parents
were given a word list as
examples for each letter. They
learned the phonetic sounds and
performed the actions, together
and in groups, when a word from
the list was read. Later, they
were able to identify the words
and phonetic sounds with the
actions. Parents also added new
words to the list. Six words,
illustrating opposites, were
explained and introduced with
movement gestures. Parents did
the movements and words together
and, by the end of the session,
they were able to match then,
even when the word pairs were
scrambled.
This interactive presentation
gave parents an opportunity to
model some arts infusion
techniques they could use, at
home, as a means of reinforcing
the English Language Arts
Curriculum at Elmwood School!
