LEARNING
TREE

What is Learning Tree?

Learning Tree is a research-based literacy intervention program specifically designed to re teach and remediate reading and writing skills. As students develop basic skills through practice, they apply them to reading comprehension and process writing strategies.

The Learning Tree resource program is a ten-week intervention program designed for students who score Below Basic or Basic on the CST. Learning Tree uses scientific research-based strategies for reading comprehension and writing. Trained teachers provide explicit and in-depth instruction with strategies that are integrated through standards-based instructional sequences. The research-based strategies utilized in this program are Reciprocal Teaching, Process Writing and Direct Instruction.

Learning Tree teachers instruct students to think metacognitively about their reading using strategies that help develop these cognitive functions:

Ø   Activating prior knowledge (schema)

Ø   Asking questions

Ø   Drawing inferences from the text

Ø   Creating visuals & sensory images

Ø   Retelling and synthesizing

Teachers also instruct students on how to utilize a variety of fix up strategies to repair comprehension when it breaks down. This is accomplished in small group instruction with a 1 to 6 ratio in elementary schools and a 1 to 10 ratio in middle schools.  Teachers present these concepts in a variety of ways; pace and chunk information and continuously check for student understanding
