NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

Background information about
School of Choice Transfer Option
Under the federal No Child Left
Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001, parents whose child(ren)
attend a school that has been identified as Program
Improvement (PI) have the right to transfer their
child(ren) to a school that has not been identified
as PI. Schools are identified as PI schools after
two consecutive years of not making Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP). California determines AYP by
considering the following four measures:
• The percentage of students scoring at the
“proficient” or “advanced” level on the California
Standards Tests for English Language Arts and
Mathematics
• The percentage of students participating in those
tests
• The graduation rate for high schools
• California’s own accountability measurement of
progress, the Academic Performance Index (API)

Transportation to the Non-PI
School of Choice School
Stockton Unified School District is required to
provide transportation to students whose parents
request a School of Choice transfer to a non-PI
School of Choice school as long as the home school
remains a PI school, or the School of Choice remains
a non-PI school. In accordance with district
policy transportation will not be provided if your
child lives within one mile of the Non-PI school.
Information about School of Choice Schools
Federal law requires that districts offer Choice
transfers at least 14 days before the beginning of
school. As the State of California releases the AYP
information after Stockton Unified schools begin,
letters
were
sent to parents whose children attend
a PI school, or a school that might be identified as
PI when AYP information is released.
Should parents wish to transfer their child to a
non-PI school they may select from the following
schools and
their application will be taken into consideration.
- Elementary: Rio Calaveras
- High School: Weber Tech or Pacific Law Academy
Additional information about these Choice Schools
may be found on our website, or by directly calling
the Choice school.
