From the Superintendent
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT GRANT
FUNDING
This memo was sent by
Superintendent Carl Toliver to
acknowledge everyone who has
worked hard to make the SIG
grant possible. Those
individuals who played a part in
securing this significant grant
and therefore received this memo
are listed at the bottom of this
page.
As you all know by now, SUSD ‘s
School Improvement Grant (SIG)
application has been
recommended for funding, to the
tune of more than 34 million
dollars! If approved by the
State Board of Education this
month, all seven of SUSD’s
SIG-eligible schools will
receive $1.5 million or more per
year for three years, which they
will use to implement one of the
school improvement models
recommended by the U.S.
Department of
Education—Turnaround model at
Taylor Elementary;
Transformation model at Fremont,
Harrison, Henry, and Roosevelt;
and Restart at Nightingale and
Pittman.
Receipt of SIG funding
represents an unprecedented
opportunity for Stockton Unified
to meet the needs of the
students at some of our lowest
performing schools! We are both
excited and energized by the
knowledge that we will have the
resources to turn these schools
around.
I wish to express thanks to all
of you who made this achievement
possible! We could not have
submitted the high quality
proposal we did without
assistance from each of you,
your leadership teams, and many
of your staff members. We
appreciate all your efforts!
A special thank you goes to the
Stockton Teachers Association
and United Stockton
Administrators for their strong
support of our proposal and to
WestEd and Action Learning
Systems for their assistance
with our SIG proposals and
continued support of our ongoing
efforts to improve student
achievement.
Sincerely,
Carl Toliver
