SEPTEMBER 2011

The opening of the 2011-2012 school year went exceptionally smooth—students and staff showed up ready and prepared to begin another year of learning. In this time of deep financial crisis, we still have many things to celebrate. We have opened three new and exciting programs for this school year. The Health Careers Academy, a program for students who are exploring the field of health care, opened its doors on the Stockton University Park campus; The Pacific Law Academy, which serves our students interested in studies that pertain to law, opened on the Stagg campus; and for those students interested in pursuing a trades career, the Vocational/Engineering Program is offered at Edison High School. The Measure Q Bond has funded the completion of several projects to date:
• Stagg High School and Edison High School ’s Football/Soccer/Track Stadium;
• Stagg Softball and Baseball Fields with supporting parking lot;
• Edison High School Electrical Infrastructure;
• Franklin High School Electrical Infrastructure and Infant Center;
• Phase II of the Franklin High School Master Plan is responsible for the construction of two new two-story classroom buildings, new main entrance road and parking lot;
• Two new classroom buildings at Nightingale Elementary School;
• Modernization of Walton Special Center and Early Childhood Education building;
• Two new classroom buildings at Van Buren Elementary School which will replace their aging portable classrooms;
During the upcoming school year:
• We expect to break ground during 2012 on the construction of the Chavez High School’s Football/Soccer/Track Stadium and Softball field:
• We will begin the modernization of Edison High School’s Taggart Gym and the construction of a new Construction and Green Technology Building and;
• We will also begin construction of Stagg High School’s new Aquatic Center.
These modernization improvements are the result of a huge effort of concerned citizens. Our students will have the opportunity to take advantage of a positive learning environment that is up-to-date, clean and modern. Our staff has done an excellent job in fulfilling the trust that the residents of Stockton has put into the district’s hands in bringing the facilities improvements to fruition.

Our test scores have increased despite having less resources than ever before. Additionally, we have been the grateful beneficiary of tremendous community support with programs ranging from literacy to sprucing up our schools. It has taken a great deal of dedication, team work and collaboration to successfully carry out all of these accomplishments.

Although violent crime is down in nearly every category from previous school years, I recognize the concerns for security on our campuses and the safety of our students which is paramount to me. I will continue to make this a priority and with the help of our staff, parents, and community partners, we will continue to make SUSD a safer environment for our students, parents, and staff.

The increase in test scores confirm that we are moving steadily ahead with our goals in student achievement, and our Student Outcomes depicted below are becoming a reality:
1. Every student by the end of 3rd grade will read and comprehend at the proficient level.
2. Every student by the end of 8th grade will demonstrate mastery of Algebra concepts and application.
3. Every student by the end of 12th grade will graduate and be college and career ready.

I have been visiting schools sites throughout the year and I see firsthand the dedication and preparation that goes into giving our students a first rate educational experience. Each year we are presented with new challenges and opportunities to serve our students. I am proud of our ability to meet those challenges and opportunities with renewed energy and commitment for excellence from our employees, parents, and community partners.
