Multicultural Arts
Celebration
“Our mission is to present
our Cultural Diversity within the
Greater Stockton Area. To accomplish
this, we will create a Multicultural
Festival where each ethnic group can
showcase their music, dance, food, craft
and games. Our event will promote
awareness between cultures, stimulate
commerce, break down barriers and
provide an environment to create social
relationships within our community.”
Stockton Arts Commission
The
Stockton Arts Commission is the
first (1976) and most active arts
promotion agency in San Joaquin County.
As an advocate for the arts, the
Commission offers a choice of
opportunities and programs, and
administers a $1.3 million
City Endowment for the Arts
benefiting artists and organizations.
Arts are abundant in Stockton. Public
art, the performing, visual and literary
arts, in their infinite variety, and
many arts and cultural festivals
continue to attract visitors and enhance
the quality of life of all who live
here.

Stockton Civic Theatre
Stockton Civic Theatre is an important
part of San Joaquin County’s history and
future—a regional showplace for great
works of performing art that influence
and enhance the lives of the residents
of California’s Great Central Valley.
The theatre was founded in 1951 by
civic-minded theatre lovers and has
continued to produce shows annually for
the past 53 years. In 1981, the theatre
opened its current 300-seat facility in
the Venetian Bridges area of Stockton,
just off March Lane. In addition to
producing six plays a season, we conduct
a dynamic theatre education program for
youth and adults.

Stockton Opera Association
In 1968,
Warren and Marietta Atherton had a dream
of bringing opera productions to the
Stockton Community. Former Stockton
Symphony Director, Kyung
Soo Won, Dr.
Arthur Holton, founder and long time
director of the Stockton Chorale, and
Dr. Lucas Underwood shared this vision,
and together with the interest and
support of the community the Stockton
Opera Association was born. The first
full-scale production, La
Traviata was
presented in April of 1969. The director
and conductor was Lucas Underwood.

Stockton Opera Guild: Promoting Public
Interest In
Opera
In 1975, nine women met in the home of
founder Marietta Atherton and formed
"The Stockton Opera Guild" to work in
partnership with the Stockton Opera
Association promoting public interest in
opera. Today, that small group has grown
to 25 members. Determined to keep opera
alive and vibrant in Stockton, the
extraordinary and enthusiastic members
of the Guild provide important financial
support through a variety of fund
raising events.

The Haggin
Museum
The Haggin
Museum, an art and history museum, has
been referred to by
Sunset
magazine as “one of the under sung gems
of California.” For 70 years, The
Haggin
Museum has acquired, maintained, and
exhibited two important types of
collections — one composed of works of
fine art and the other devoted to area
history.
