California Arts Advocates (CAA)
CAA develops strategies and coordinates
advocacy that strengthen arts and culture in
California, this includes lobbying to
support legislation that benefits arts and
culture, alerting and advising the arts
community on necessary responsive action and
providing coordinated testimony and
evidentiary support materials at public
hearings.

California Arts Assessment Network (CAAN)
Now in its fifth year of work, CAAN,
supported by CA Dept of Education (CDE) Arts
Work grants, is developing and piloting
appropriate models for district level arts
assessment. Their work for the 2002-2003
year includes expanding a collection of test
items for baseline arts assessment and
sample assessment formats. The CAAN Network
has produced a professional development
video/handbook set demonstrating the use of
scoring guides to establish performance
levels for student work in the arts. CAAN is
also developing a project to explore the
relationship between assessing the arts
content standards and student work samples.
A bill (SB 1548) sponsored by Senator
Alarcon and the California PTA designates
CAAN in assisting the CDE to develop a pool
of diagnostic assessment items for the arts
content standards.

(CETA)
CETA is a nonprofit organization that
advocates for theatre education in
California, encourages and promotes the
development of theatre education and strives
to improve communication among workers in

California Humanities Association (CHA)
CHA supports interdisciplinary education in
the arts and humanities throughout the
schools and colleges of California and

The California School Boards Association

Arts" Campaign
California State PTA (CAPTA) has launched a
campaign called SMARTS "Bring Back the
Arts." The campaign is designed to help
parents, teachers and legislators understand
just how important the arts are. CAPTA wants
to create advocates for quality arts
education at every school in California.

Model Arts Program Network (MAP)
The purpose of MAP is to help school

on-line arts resource center available for
statewide use. Developed through an Arts
Work grant from the California Department of
Education by the Kern and San Bernardino

as well as networking opportunities in
assessment and model arts programs.
